Regarding #2 in the treatment of them, i am confident your intentions are in good faith. who is defining which kinks are “acceptable” and which are “squick”? who gets to decide what is more “controversial”? why aren’t all kinks treated the same? the division reinforces shame around being interested in anything on the special “ew” list and that’s sort of a weird vibe to kick off a kinktober with, you feel me? Regarding #1, i think i have a negative reaction to it because, regardless of intention, it ends up coming off as pretty judgmental and even anti-kink. So i’m sort of questioning two different things here:ġ) the division of kink (“squick”/“controversial”) from the rest andĢ) the treatment of the fic in that category

i agree with mandating archive locks, but if someone is truly compelled, they will make an ao3 account. that said, people who want to find fanworks in order to be malicious about them? they will do that no matter what. Those are both super understandable fears and i think fandom as a whole has a collective duty to protect ourselves from the subjects and the subjects from us. Understanding there was a big containment breach recently and that it might be influencing fandom participants to be a little more cautious, i want to address what i think the real fears are here.ġ) that people who are not the intended audience will find and read the fic or view the art and then perhaps go on to mock it and/or expose the people creating itĢ) that bad actors will show it to the people it is about, potentially making the subjects feel harassed and the author/artists embarrassed i have no expectation that you read and respond to this but i just want to offer it up as food for thought.
I do have some thoughts and thought reblogging with commentary might be a little easier than spamming your replies haha. i really appreciate it and also i appreciate the immense amount of energy and effort that goes into organizing fandom events like this.
Hey there! first, thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my question. So, squick list works, be it fanfic or fanart or edits, are to be kept on AO3, anonymous and archive locked! They might be aware of RPF and just ignoring it, or they may be not aware at all, but we think it’s best to keep the “more controversial” stuff anonymous and out of their reach. Okay we all know how fandom tends to… break out of containment sometimes - we have seen what has happened with hockey and booktok, we know that some late night hosts have shown fanart/fanfic to celebrities, the people involved get tagged in fandom stuff on socmed and, lastly, F1 social media itself has started using ship names. pink background to aid against eye strain, but if anyone finds this inaccessible for any reason please let me know and i will create higher contrast black & white versions as well!.if anyone has articles or clippings from other pubs and would like to contribute to this archive, i would welcome that! these are from common english-language magazines.if anyone happens to have matching images–perhaps from your own print copies or returns from a different database–i would love to get them!
